Final Video Project

My first draft didn’t go too well. I had a difficult time using the program—only to discover later that it wasn’t as difficult as I initially thought. I interviewed my sister but didn’t have a direction for the video. After filming, I edited the clips, added a beginning and ending slide and was done. I was desperate for feedback because I felt like I hit a wall.

After receiving critiques from my group, I felt invigorated. I struggled a bit with the direction I wanted my video to go, not knowing the best way to achieve the vague direction I had in mind. Each group member provided insightful suggestions to help with my final revision. I looked at the final version as more of a short video in a series videos about social media. With this in mind, I had a much better direction and got right to work.

First, I needed to reshoot some of the interview. The first time I interviewed my sister, I had my iPhone vertical because it was natural for me to hold it that way. Remembering that videos should be shot horizontally, I reshot some of the questions and used various angles for a more dynamic outcome. Ironically, my sister was in the same outfit she had been in when I first interviewed her. I kept a few of the old clips because I wasn’t able to recreate the same exuberance.

Learning from my group’s feedback, I recorded an introduction (to set up the video) and ending. I didn’t want a blank screen during my intro so I used Creative Commons to find an appropriate picture. After I had my video and audio, I got to work editing. I edited my video in sequence, from beginning to end, because I’m not the type of person who can jump around. For each question I asked my sister in the interview, I added a title slide with the question written on it. I edited each video and cut some of the unnecessary parts to the video.

Once I had the video laid out the way I liked, I watched the video to make sure the viewer has enough time to read each question. For some questions, I had to extend the length of the slide. When that was finished, I went through the video and added transitions wherever I felt was appropriate.

I really wanted to take a video of myself going to my personal Facebook and Twitter profiles, but I couldn’t find a way to fit that into the video. It didn’t fit with what I had. Although I was sad (actually, I’m still sad), I know it wouldn’t have worked with the flow of my video.

Overall, I enjoyed the program once I got the hang of using it, and I’m so pleased with the final outcome. I hope you enjoy the video.
